Today was an amazing day! Jennie Masten and I met with the Stoughton Park and Rec Committee. They approved a motion for our concept and are moving forward with identifying if there are any barriers to our first choice for the Park. This is the first hurdle of many that we face but it is the beginning.
Our first choice, Lowell Park, on Milwaukee Street is our first choice for many reasons. First, it is a relatively level park. This is very important when planning for a playground area that will be accessible to all. It also has space that can be utilized for additional off street parking. And one of the biggest bonuses is shade. We are hoping to capitalize on the underutilized wooded area and build our park within the tree canopy once it is cleared of underbrush and some of the trees. We would like to keep as many as possible to retain a natural feel and have plenty of shade. In speaking with other parents at the other Dream parks there is a resounding opinion that shade is of the utmost importance.
Another important aspect is the close proximity to downtown as we feel the park will be of considerable benefit to the local businesses simply because it is a Dream Park, but also because it is going to be the only one of its kind in the area and will bring people from all over. Not to mention the fact that we will have lots of things there for everyone to do including the adults, like some adult exercise equipment for people while they watch their children.
The city has approved the plan and agrees that should our first choice be unavailable due to some potential zoning complications, we will move to our second or third choices. The city was very receptive and supportive and we are excited to begin the monumental task of fund raising and selecting volunteer committee members.
There are a lot of positions that need to be filled and we intend to break the responsibilities into manageable tasks for everyone involved, so if you are interested in helping but feel you cannot commit a lot of time. Do not fret, we will work together to find something you can feel comfortable doing.
This park will take a community to build it and we need you to help us make this Dream come true for children and adults in our area.
Email stoughtondreampark@gmail.com if you have a talent you would like to lend with the project.
Some things we are in need of are, event planning assistance, advertising, record keeping, equipment loans, donation coordinators, public liaison, public relations, and much, much, more. Please do not hesitate to contact us for questions or ideas for fundraising.
WE NEED YOU!
That is all for this evening. We are so excited to make this a possibility and are looking forward to a ambitious date of May 2013. Please help us make it happen.
Sincerely,
Beth Kohlhoff
