Yesterday I talked at length with a reporter from the Stoughton Courier Hub. Derek Spellman called and asked a lot of questions about the Park and what was brewing.
I excitedly told him all about our project. Where we started, where we have been, where we are at now and what the future holds.
In case you are unaware this amazing project has only physically been in the works for a short time. Conceptually it has been around for much longer than that. Jennie Masten, my Co-Director has been imagining this Park since she moved back to Stoughton some time ago. She has a brother, Adam Notstad, who has some special needs and she has seen that there were few, if any recreation opportunities in the area. She has worked with students with special needs and is aware of how much they would benefit from a Park like ours.
We were talking late one night and the topic came up and we decided to run with it. We began brainstorming that night, the next morning and for a few days after that. We had oodles of ideas an information and couldn't wait to share everything with anyone who would listen.
We contacted Tom Lynch at the Stoughton Park and Recreation Department and he seemed to really like our idea. Long story short, we quickly found ourselves in from of the Park and recreation Committee. They really seemed to like our idea and approved the concept. The began exploring the feasibility in our first choice for a location, but said we would have other options available if the first choice didn't work out.
Amazing! We decided to start planning a fundraiser and organizational meeting because we are going to need a lot of money and help. A LOT! We need about $400,000 at least due to the specialized equipment and all of the exciting amenities we want to make sure are there. Amenities like adult exercise equipment, adult swings, bench swings, texture tables, sound features, braille, a maze, a clock tower and so much more.
Plus there are things we must have like a poured rubber surface. It is safer, and more accessible for everyone. There is no maintenance to speak of, no filling the wood chips every year (or picking them out of shoes), but it is considerably more expensive.
And help, we need so much help. We need people for little jobs and big jobs. Grant Coordinators, Event Coordinators, Media Relations, Volunteer Coordinators. The list goes on.
We can make this happen but we need you, and you and you!
Come to the Organizational Meeting on October 5th from 6-8pm at the Stoughton Fire Station Meeting Room.
Come ask questions. Come share your ideas. Come Volunteer.
We need you!
Oh and you will have a chance to vote on some of the logos some of our amazing volunteers have created and determine what will be the 'face' of the Park!
