Amazing things are happening!

You may or may not know that we are now considering Norse park on Kriedeman Drive in Stoughton as the potential location for the Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park.
The Stoughton Park and Rec Committee is set to take up the issue on Wednesday at 5:30pm and we are again hoping that the Park and Recreation Committee approves the location and will send it to the Stoughton City Council to be approved.
Sunday afternoon Jennie Masten and I delivered flyers to approximately 40 homes surrounding the park. The flyers gave a brief bit of information about the Park and what we intend to bring to the Stoughton Community. We wanted to make sure the neighbors we aware and allow them an opportunity to come and hear more about it at the Wednesday Park and Recreation meeting.
We knocked on each door we delivered flyers to and if people we home we told them about our amazing project and what ti would mean for the Park in its current state.
Most everyone we talked to, except for one person, seemed very excited and super supportive. We can only hope that those who support us will be vocal advocates for the Park.

We are also scheduled to have a meeting with State Assembly Representative Gary Hebl regarding our project on November 22nd at the Capitol. THAT is some pretty exciting stuff.

I also passed out some more flyers downtown today and most people are pretty excited about the project. I love when they say they have already heard about it!

Got some more promises for donations for the Silent Auction and some gift certificates today from Forrest Street Furniture . Check it out on the updated list!

Amazing things are happening in Stoughton! Don't you want to be a part of it too?

Thanks to all who have Donated!

We just received gift certificates from Curves and Stoughton Opera House today! And a generous donor has given us half of the money needed to begin filing for our non-profit organization.  Hooray!

We need all the help we can get and we are currently accepting donations to pay for the filing process. If you would like to donate please email stoughtondreampark@gmail.com .

The initial filing fee for LLC status, the first step is $130 and we received $65 from Derek Eufinger yesterday. Thank you Derek. It seems like we may have the rest of that initial feel covered but there is a fee associated with the 501c3 status as well. Any extra money we receive would go toward the cost of the park.

Thank you to all of the Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park supporters. Each day we are closer.

Help! We need you!

After consulting with the Stoughton area Community Foundation it appears as though it may be in our best interest to form our own non-profit. This is a daunting task that requires paperwork we are not familiar with.
If you, or anyone you know, are an attorney willing to help us navigate the process we NEED you.  We would like to have something at least in the works prior to our fundraiser December 17th.

Please contact 608-873-3562 or 920-285-6149 as soon as possible or email stoughtondreampark@gmail.com

Please share this with your friends who may know of someone generous enough to help this amazing project.

City-Wide Informational Meeting and other stuff

Today we scheduled a City-Wide Informational Meeting for December 1st, 2011 at the Stoughton Fire Station Meeting Room from 5-7pm.

Information about the meeting will go out in the Tower Times; a city newsletter that is sent to every household. We will also notify the Stoughton Courier HUB and information should be mentioned in the Senior Center Newsletter.

We hope to get maximum visibility before this event to allow residents the opportunity to come and find out what the Park is all about, ask questions, address concerns, and volunteer to help. It is scheduled about 2 weeks before our first fundraiser and we hope to gain a lot of volunteers for that event because we will need a lot of help.

If you are interested in helping or would like to sign up for a booth at the fundraiser, please email stoughtondreampark@gmail.com or call 873-3562.

Today I met with the Stoughton Area Community Foundation to ask for help in either establishing a non-profit, setting up a pass through arrangement, or some other arrangement that will allow us to operate under the umbrella of a non-profit. We would like to ensure that all donations are tax-deductible and provide our supporters with the assurance that we are not functioning as a for-profit organization.

It was wonderful to meet with them and we appreciate their time and consideration immensely and look forward to working with them in some capacity in the future. Thank you Stoughton Area Community Foundation.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Your donation of time, services, or goods has been extremely beneficial and your commitment should be recognized.

Thank you from the Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park Committee.

A Thank You, A New Site, and Options

Mike Maloney from MSA Professional Services is nothing short of AMAZING. I emailed him Friday and let him know that after further investigation the East Side location was not going to work. We don't want to damage any trees and moving forward could potentially damage some very old trees. That was something Jennie and I have never intended, nor would allow.

Mike had already done a lot of work on the East Side park and I was worried he would be upset and would not want to continue working with us. His response, "I'm all in. "

Thank you Mike!

That in itself was amazing but by the end of the day he had emailed a picture of the newest proposed location, Norse Park, with 2 potential playground sites identified. I asked if he could add a parking area with about 30 additional spaces and several ADA accessible parking spaces.

He let me know there was an ice rink there in the winter which I did not know but he was able to add the parking area while still preserving some of the ice rink.

This picture is simply a proposal . Please understand that nothing is certain.

This, again, is a proposed site. As you can see we do have some options with this site. The major downfall is there is no shade. This is something that we hope to remedy with the addition of pergolas and adding trees and other shading features. We think this site may be the best option yet as it does leave us with some flexibility.

What do you think of this new site?

Thank you as always to Mike Maloney and MSA Professional Services for all of your hard work !

Good News, Bad news

The good news is we should no longer be facing resistance from East Side Park Neighbors.
This is because after further inspection we are not able to use the poured in place rubber surfacing as close to the existing trees as we hoped. While we are disappointed we are fine with that because we certainly do not want to damage such beautiful trees. They are definitely an asset and it was never our goal to disrupt anything.

The fact is that while the manufacturers claim the surfacing is porous, it is not as porous as it would need to be for such a large tree with such a large root structure. The air exchange and water needed to maintain the trees health requires the area around the tree to be further out that we have allowable room for.

We are definitely disappointed but we are glad that we will be protecting the trees. And certainly we are happy that the East Side Neighbors will be happy too.

Where does this leave us?

The city had requested we examine Bjion and we did that. The deal breaker with Bjion is the extremely loud train whistle that happens as trains pass through. Anyone who has ever had a small child who is afraid of loud noise or trains will tell you that they are really distressed. This is often made worse with a child who is affected by autism. They often respond in such a way that is very hard to comfort and can be distressing for other children to see. We certainly do not want that as a regular occurrence.

Again, Where does that leave us?

Our next option is Norse park which has always been our next choice. We like Norse because it is a beautiful park with a lot of open space to put a large play system. We like it because it has a lot of parking with the potential to add more. It has a nice shelter that can be adaptable for accessibility. We hope that the park neighbors are more used to a well used park as they deal with baseball and softball games quite a bit.

What are the down sides.  There is no shade. That is one major concern of ours but it looks like we have found an attractive solution. The company that we would like to use builds beautiful pergolas that provide shade and are attractive too. We are looking into the possibility of using vines to accent their shade and beauty at Norse we can plant the trees where we want them .

The down side to this is cost. This will reduce the amount of money we intend to use for equipment or increase our budget. That is unless of course we can somehow squeeze it all in together or get trees donated.

Are you a neighbor of Norse Park?  We would LOVE to hear from you! What are your thoughts on the project.

We are working with the city to get a mailer out to all of the households and schedule a city informational meeting. We can increase the amount of information out there about the park and answer questions and address concerns.

Have a great day.

Who will this playground serve?

I am often asked how many people will a playground of this type serve.
In addition to all of the able bodied children and adults in our community the information I was able to locate from the US Census Bureau suggests there are many people of varying disabilities in our community who may be under-served in terms of available outdoor recreational activities.  Opportunities as they exist now are limited to a few accessible swings.

These statistics are from the 2000 census and have likely changed somewhat. As updated information is found it will be added. Complete information can be found here .

With 12,000+ people in the Stoughton Community this is, in our opinion, a significant amount of people who would utilize the accessible equipment.

If the project was simply for them it would be a lot. We are unsure if this number accurately reflects all of the people with disabilities that we intend to provide recreational equipment for. For example does this number reflect all of the children with autism spectrum disorders and other sensory issues?
We intend to continue to try and find a more definitive number but as it stands we still believe this is a significant portion of the population and it does not include the surrounding communities who will undoubtedly travel to Stoughton to utilize the park.

It cannot be said enough that this playground is intended to be inclusive. It will not simply allow children and adults to recreate but to recreate side by side with other members of their community.
It will also allow adults to recreate side by side with their children something we think is truly unique.

So, how many people will this playground serve?

Our vision is that it will serve nearly everyone.

Question

I received this question via email today and thought it would be best to answer the question here because if one person was unsure then others would be too and it is important to us to get all of the information we can about the park out to people in our community. We really do welcome your questions or concerns. If I have missed information I am sorry, the best way to find out is to ask and we appreciate that someone has asked.

What is the proposed surface area to be covered by the rubber material that you mention on the blog?  What is the material, exactly?

My response:

I will do my best to answer your questions.
The rubber surfacing is called poured in place rubber and it is the most accessible ground covering for people for people with disabilities and it offers a cushioned surface for a safety surface for people in terms of falling. The poured in place rubber is porous and allows for water to reach roots below the surface if there are any. Additionally it can be made in nearly any color although we would choose to have it be a natural color that would blend with the park. For example it could be a deep color similar to soil or more of a grass color.
The surface is more accessible because it is smooth and unlike woodchips or rubber chips will not have to be replaced regularly or cause problems when pushing a wheel chair or a walker or for people with unsteady gait like a small child or older adult or someone with a disability.
Some examples of colors available are

And as stated before we would not chose bright colors, but neutral ones.
An example of a green poured in place surface is here
Apparently this is rubber mulch after further examination but poured in place will look very similar.
Please do not use the playground in this picture as an example because the playground built will be plastic but look like wood  and the company we are planning on going with builds projects that will look more like this

Although this is an example, it is really important to us to maintain the beauty of any park and this is a close example of the style. Additionally the park is customizable and we are able to ensure we get exactly what we need.
The proposed space for the park is approximately 10-11,000 square feet although it is not a square space.

I hope that this answers your questions and I am always welcome to more.  Please feel free to email or call whenever you would like. We really would love to speak with anyone who has questions or concerns so we value your request for information.

Resistance

The Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park is meeting some resistance regarding the location we have chosen. While we are looking at a few other options it seems that East Side Park is a desirable location for many reasons.
  1. One of them is shade. We have spoken with many people at other parks and the primary complaint among people is a lack of shade. People have said they do not utilize the parks as much during peak daylight hours due to the heat and sun exposure. This is a big concern because the park should be available all of the hours it is open. Additionally, there are a number of people who may utilize the playground who have sensitivity to sunlight due to medication or other reasons. Again this is a concern and a main reason we chose East Side Park.
  2. Another reason we chose East Side Park is the existing shelter. While it would increase our budget to build on a side without a shelter or a shelter that would require updating this is not the main concern but rather we are concerned about distance to the playground for people. People with various disabilities will find it difficult to travel long distances to the playground. Additionally, it is not always a positive experience for playground visitors to attempt to corral children to take one child to the restroom so a restroom or shelter that is closer will be more ideal than not. Additionally, if there is an existing shelter it is important that the shelter restrooms be able to be updated, or are already, accessible to people with disabilities.
  3. Another consideration is levelness of the park. Due to the inclusive nature of this project it is important that the park and proposed playground, parking and travel space to the shelter be relatively level as there are certain requirements for wheelchair accessibility.
  4. Safety is another concern. it is imperative that safety be considered no mater what site is chosen and some of the concerns are speed of traffic and potential for injury. Some of the parks have baseball diamonds and children and people with disabilities are more likely to be less able to respond rapidly to an object flying through the air. Another consideration is regular liquor consumption. Occasional usage at the shelter is much different than alcohol consumption weekly at baseball games as we see it.
  5. Proximity to downtown- this project is designed to benefit the entire community. People of all ages and abilities. Aside from offering recreational equipment for small children and older adults or various abilities we are seeking to provide a benefit for the business community by increasing the amount of tourism to our community. We really want to share the beautiful community that we live in with others and our local businesses really cannot be beat. As a result it is important to us to locate the park as near to downtown as possible and require people who visit from out of town to see our wonderful downtown and all it has to offer just by the geographical placement of the park. As a result parks located on the perimeter of Stoughton are much less desirable than ones located downtown. We feel including the business community will also help us raise funds more effectively.
  6. Ecological Considerations- there are certain types of vegetation that will be harmful to the poured in place rubber surfacing that is required for the accessible nature of the project. Trees that form new trees by producing sucker root systems will likely damage the very expensive surface.
Ultimately we are hoping to blend with the beauty of our community and the natural area we seek to improve. We are hoping that people can see the enormous benefit of our project and that we do not seek to benefit one specific population but rather our entire population as a whole. We are planning to blend with the historic feel of the community and add features like a clock tower replica and Norwegian influences.  We hope that we can move forward with this project and hope you will join in supporting us.

If you have questions or concerns PLEASE email me at stoughtondreampark@gmail.com or call 608-873-3562 . We are happy to discuss the project with you.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Can you help?

The Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park Co-Directors have preliminarily decided what company we will use to build the Playground.

Leathers and Associates  is an amazing company that will be able to build the playground out of composite materials. It will look like wood but actually be recycled plastic lumber or composite materials, reducing maintenance and making the project look more natural, as well as allowing for some interesting design components.

We are hoping to incorporate the historic Norwegian feel and our clock tower as elements in the project and feel this company is the best suited to do that.  it is important to us that our project have a natural feel and blend as much as possible with our amazing community.

In order to begin the design process we need to submit $250.00 to secure a design day. This will allow the company to begin designing a playground based on our specifications and incorporate public input.

Can you help us meet this goal? Contact me at Stoughtondreampark@gmail.com to make a donation and help begin our project!

YOU can make a difference.

Thanks MSA
