We need your help.

We are in need of someone to do some volunteer surveying work of the newly proposed site in Stoughton for the Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park. We would like to develop a physical plan as the City Park and Recreation Committee is set to discuss the matter of East Side Park and potentially move it forward to the City Council for final approval.

Do you know anyone that can help? Please email at stoughtondreampark@gmail.com   or call Beth Kohlhoff 608-873-3562 as soon as possible.

Thank you for your help.

The Tree Guy

Randy Nelson is the Forester for the city of Stoughton. He has been really fantastic in explaining things about trees. Things we didn't consider. Things we didn't know.
As a result it seems like Lowell park will be a more costly option. Not only because we would have to build a shelter from scratch. Not only because we would have to clear the woods because the trees are not an ideal species and pose a risk of falling over. Not only because we require poured in place rubber surfacing and the trees have sucker roots that could potentially ruin the rubber surface in a number of years.
It is all of those things...
The trees are not ideal because they are soft wood and can potentially shed dead branches. Plus they are eighty feet tall, some of them and once the area is thinned out and we try to keep some, we lose the current "windbreak" situation that exists and those trees are likely to topple.
If we cleared them all, there wouldn't be any shade left, at all.
Plus, there is the whole root problem.

We explored East-side park at Lynn and Park Streets, which was always our plan B, and it turns out it is more optimal than 1st suspected. It just required a second look, a different angle, and a tree guy.

We really need to thank Tom Lynch, Sean Brusager, and Randy Nelson for all of the time and energy they have spent so far helping us with this project. We wouldn't be anywhere if it wasn't for them. So if you call the Park Department, the Maintenance Department or Forestry. Say THANK YOU! Because they are really exceptional people and we really appreciate them. You should too. They work unbelievably hard!
This picture is East-Side Park at Lynn and Park Streets
There is an existing shelter that the Lion's Club generously built years ago that would require updating and expansion. That is outlined in Green.
The proposed walkway in yellow will be lined with trees that people can sponsor and place "in memory of...." , as well as flower gardens they can sponsor.
The proposed playground in blue will have beautiful old growth oaks framing it and newer trees creating some great south shade and east/west as well.
The red area will be parking and will only require the removal of one tree that is already dead and an ash tree that will probably go anyway.

The ground is much more level than originally thought , and the shade better as well. the park has the potential for more growth too.
Either way we hope to move forward and the path of least resistance (nature wise)  and where we will get more bang for our buck is ideal.

Do you have questions about the Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park?

A lot of people have questions about The Stoughton Inclusive Dream Park.
Where is it going to be?
How much will it cost?
Who is going to pay for it?
Who is the Park for?
I don't have children, why would I want to help?

Most of these questions can be answered in our initial proposal. You can find that here.

If you have other questions that are not answered in the proposal or have ideas, we would LOVE to hear them. You can email us here.

If you need to reach of someone immediately, please call 608-873-3562. Co-Director Beth Kohlhoff would be happy to answer your questions, listen to your ideas or concerns, or share more information about the Park.

Have a wonderful day!

Newsworthy.... and how it all started

Yesterday I talked at length with a reporter from the Stoughton Courier Hub. Derek Spellman called and asked a lot of questions about the Park and what was brewing.

I excitedly told him all about our project. Where we started, where we have been, where we are at now and what the future holds.

In case you are unaware this amazing project has only physically been in the works for a short time. Conceptually it has been around for much longer than that. Jennie Masten, my Co-Director has been imagining this Park since she moved back to Stoughton some time ago. She has a brother, Adam Notstad, who has some special needs and she has seen that there were few, if any recreation opportunities in the area. She has worked with students with special needs and is aware of how much they would benefit from a Park like ours.

We were talking late one night and the topic came up and we decided to run with it. We began brainstorming that night, the next morning and for a few days after that. We had oodles of ideas an information and couldn't wait to share everything with anyone who would listen.

We contacted Tom Lynch at the Stoughton Park and Recreation Department and he seemed to really like our idea. Long story short, we quickly found ourselves in from of the Park and recreation Committee.  They really seemed to like our idea and approved the concept. The began exploring the feasibility in our first choice for a location, but said we would have other options available if the first choice didn't work out.

Amazing! We decided to start planning a fundraiser and organizational meeting because we are going to need a lot of money and help.  A LOT! We need about $400,000 at least due to the specialized equipment and all of the exciting amenities we want to make sure are there. Amenities like adult exercise equipment, adult swings, bench swings, texture tables, sound features, braille, a maze, a clock tower and so much more.
Plus there are things we must have like a poured rubber surface. It is safer, and more accessible for everyone. There is no maintenance to speak of, no filling the wood chips every year (or picking them out of shoes), but it is considerably more expensive.

And help, we need so much help. We need people for little jobs and big jobs. Grant Coordinators, Event Coordinators, Media Relations, Volunteer Coordinators. The list goes on.

We can make this happen but we need you, and you and you!

Come to the Organizational Meeting on October 5th from  6-8pm at the Stoughton Fire Station Meeting Room.

Come ask questions. Come share your ideas. Come Volunteer.
We need you!

Oh and you will have a chance to vote on some of the logos some of our amazing volunteers have created and determine what will be the 'face' of the Park!

Just Imagine!

Kwik Trip has a generous community support program. They have a fairly easy form that requests donations. It has a drop down menu for the type of donation requested. One of those options is cash. It then asked what you would specifically like to request.
I asked for $50,000. I feel like our park will be so instrumental in bringing people to the area that Kwik Trip stands to benefit just as much as simply by the nature of their business, their proximity to the park, and the visibility they would gain if they did give such a large donation.
We are not opposed to allowing the donor with the greatest donation an opportunity to name the park. The Kwik Trip Inclusive Playground at Lowell Park in Stoughton could be an option.

Of course if anyone one else wants to donate more, we could reconsider that name.  We need a lot of help.
This park will be amazing and will benefit so many people we must be willing to ask for help.
Businesses stand to benefit just as much as anyone else simply by the unique nature of the park and we hope that it becomes the model for future parks.

Imagine, people of All ages  enjoying time TOGETHER. Adults using exercise equipment while their kids play, seniors swinging and interacting with children, people with disabilities using the same equipment everyone else does, options for people of all abilities and ages to exercise and have fun! Caregivers will allow their loved ones to swing and play while they get a much needed break.

This park will energize and renew us all.

It will be amazing and we all have to do it together. We need your help, we need Kwik Trip's help, we need other businesses to step up and recognize how unique this project is and how many people will come to see what we have built.

Please share this page and idea with your family and friends far and wide because it will help everyone. Not just in our area. Our success will ensure that other people use our idea as a model for future parks, and just IMAGINE what that could do.

Today

Today we got lots of catalogs from Sean at Stoughton Park and Rec to look through for ideas. Lots of great stuff! There are some things we think are really important for the park and they are not in any of them.  So we will have to make them, or find them.
If anyone knows anyone in engineering or an engineering student, please contact us. We have a challenge for you!

Contacted the Packers today and some other companies for donations. We have to wait for a response. Lots of behind the scenes work and phone calls today.
We are working on gaining 501c3 IRS Status and many other things. We appreciate all of the support we have gotten so far. OUR - (meaning YOURS too) Park is going to be AMAZING.

And it will be our legacy.

Our first flyer to get the word out.

Our first fundraising flyer is a temporary flyer designed to get the word out about our fundraiser. If everyone printed 5-10 copies and passed them out it would reduce the costs we will have at printing them and it would be a great way for you to help if you are unable to help in other ways. Other flyers will be produced and shown here as they are made. Thanks for your help!

We are also meeting with a local charitable organization on Monday to hopefully forge an important alliance. Details to follow.  Things are moving fast which is what we want.

We have an ambitious goal of  May, 2013.

The picture above shows the proposed placement of the park. The yellow area indicates where the playground itself will go. The blue are indicates where a new shelter will go and the red area will be a parking lot. The green area indicates where the community garden is with the likely expansion.

A Little Closer

During the Park and Recreation meeting Wednesday night it was decided that the City would determine if there were any zoning problems with placing the park in the location we chose.
Today we received a call from Sean Brusager, with the City of Stoughton and he confirmed that the zoning department has determined there does not seem to be a problem with placing our park where we want it. This is excellent news!

The next step is to confirm with the Tree Commission and Forestry Department that there will not be a problem placing the playground in the wooded area of the park as it will require some clearing of the trees.

We are so blessed to be receiving such amazing support from the City of Stoughton.

Please stay tuned for updates and we look forward to sharing more good news about our amazing project.

Step One !

Today was an amazing day! Jennie Masten and I met with the Stoughton Park and Rec Committee. They approved a motion for our concept and are moving forward with identifying if there are any barriers to our first choice for the Park.  This is the first hurdle of many that we face but it is the beginning.
Our first choice, Lowell Park, on Milwaukee Street is our first choice for many reasons. First, it is a relatively level park. This is very important when planning for a playground area that will be accessible to all.  It also has space that can be utilized for additional off street parking.  And one of the biggest bonuses is shade. We are hoping to capitalize on the underutilized wooded area and build our park within the tree canopy once it is cleared of underbrush and some of the trees.  We would like to keep as many as possible to retain a natural feel and have plenty of shade. In speaking with other parents at the other Dream parks there is a resounding opinion that shade is of the utmost importance.
Another important aspect is the close proximity to downtown as we feel the park will be of considerable benefit to the local businesses simply because it is a Dream Park, but also because it is going to be the only one of its kind in the area and will bring people from all over. Not to mention the fact that we will have lots of things there for everyone to do including the adults, like some adult exercise equipment for people while they watch their children.

The city has approved the plan and agrees that should our first choice be unavailable due to some potential zoning complications, we will move to our second or third choices. The city was very receptive and supportive and we are excited to begin the monumental task of fund raising and selecting volunteer committee members.

There are a lot of positions that need to be filled and we intend to break the responsibilities into manageable tasks for everyone involved, so if you are interested in helping but feel you cannot commit a lot of time. Do not fret, we will work together to find something you can feel comfortable doing.

This park will take a community to build it and we need you to help us make this Dream come true for children and adults in our area.

Email stoughtondreampark@gmail.com if you have a talent you would like to lend with the project.

Some things we are in need of are, event planning assistance, advertising, record keeping, equipment loans, donation coordinators, public liaison,  public relations, and much, much, more.  Please do not hesitate to contact us for questions or  ideas for fundraising.
WE NEED YOU!

That is all for this evening. We are so excited to make this a possibility and are looking forward to a ambitious date of May 2013. Please help us make it happen.

Sincerely,

Beth Kohlhoff
